What is secondary infertility? Secondary infertility is when the couple has conceived with no problem prior but the next time after having unprotected intercourse are unable to conceive. Both male and female factors are involved and about one-quarter of the cases the causes of multi-factorial.
Most Prevalent Is Age
The most common reason for secondary infertility is age. There is a decrease in fertility after the age of 35 for women. By the age of 40, the chances are even more decreased. The number of sperm can also decrease in men and can play a major factor. Also, if you have introduced a new partner but was able to conceive with the old partner there may be problem with conception between you and the new partner. This can go both ways. If the both of you were able to conceive with the old partners and you may not be able to conceive with each other now.
Other Health Factors
Now that you may be older, there may be other factors that are playing a role in your secondary infertility. Some medications or medical conditions may cause infertility. You may want to be checked. Many couples who have been able to conceive before will go without being checked because they do not think there is a problem with the fertility. It has already worked for them before. Therefore, they never really know that there is a problem. Get checked by a specialist. Find out if there is a problem. Secondary infertility can be very frustrating but at least you would know that there is in fact a problem.
Support
Many times when couples are going through frustrating times, they may point fingers or look for someone to blame. Do not do this. If you secondary infertility is due to some thing like age well neither of you can stop it and it is no one fault. Pointing fingers is not a supportive or good way in any means to get through a hard time. You really need to find out why or what the problem is. Have both of you tested. Both of you should see a counselor and talk about angers and concerns. Find out what the problem is and keep lines of communication open for each other.
Some couples already have children together when faced with secondary infertility. Do not forget about the children you already have together. They will not totally understand what is going on but they still need mom and dad to love them and be apart of their lives. It is so important for the other children not to be caught up in the middle of this. Make sure you are not resenting your children because you are unable to have a new baby. Get counseling.
